Foreign Trade in Figures

Foreign trade represents 137% of the GDP. Even though trade remains very much controlled by the government, customs duties are relatively low, with an average applied tariff rate of 10.6%. However, non-tariff barriers - such as the restrictions on import licences, several different import taxes, tax incentives offered to local exporters - are not favourable to establish a healthy trade environment. That being said, a series of decisions aiming at liberalising commerce are currently being implemented.

Fiji is the 148th largest exporter and the 153rd largest importer in the world. In 2016, Fiji exported USD 941 million and imported USD 2.3 billion, resulting in a negative trade balance of USD 1.4 billion (Fiji Bureau of Statistics). Such substantial trade deficit is expected to continue in the upcoming years.

The most recent exports are led by water (12.4%), followed by refined petroleum (9.3%) and raw sugar (8.4%). The most recent imports are led by refined petroleum which represent 18.6% of the total imports of Fiji.
The top export destinations of Fijian products are the United States (24%), Australia (16%) and Japan (6.1%). The main import origins are Singapore (16%), China (14%) and Australia (14%).
